Schoolwide read-aloud sparks curiosity with a focus on mystery

At Cordelia Hills Elementary School, reading is an adventure meant to be shared – by students, families, and the educators who guide them every step of the way.

Recently, students across all grade levels participated in a schoolwide read-aloud of Malcolm at Midnight by W.H. Beck, creating a shared story experience that extends far beyond the classroom walls. Every family received a copy of the book to enjoy at home, ensuring all students can take part in reading together.

At the heart of the program is a focus on ensuring that students see reading as joyful, meaningful, and something that connects them to their school community. Through a Google Classroom, students can listen as familiar teachers and staff read chapters aloud, making the story come alive in voices they know and trust. The online space also includes activities designed to spark curiosity, imagination, and conversation at home.

“This experience is about helping students fall in love with reading and see it as something that brings people together,” said Principal Megan Thole. “Our staff was excited to be part of the read-aloud because it allows students to hear their teachers in a different way and feel connected to our school.”

FSUSD Superintendent Jennifer Sachs emphasized the student-centered impact of the initiative: “When students see the adults in their lives excited about reading, it sends a powerful message, showing our students that reading matters, and that the entire school community is invested in their success.”

The program reflects the deep commitment of Cordelia Hills educators to to support literacy while strengthening relationships with students and families. By blending at-home reading, digital access, and educator participation, Cordelia Hills Elementary is building a culture where literacy is celebrated every day. Students are at the center of the story of Malcolm at Midnight, and the message is loud and clear: this is a school that loves to read – together!
